Rights Respecting Schools Workshop

We are now well on our way along our journey to become a Rights Respecting School. Miss Mahmood is working with staff and pupils to pull together our Action Plan for Silver and once this is submitted later this month, we hope that we will be awarded Bronze status. Unlike bigger schools who have a steering group of pupils who take forward children’s rights work as part of RRSA, we are involving all of our pupils in this important work. As part of this, Mrs Carter led a whole school workshop on the morning of Wednesday 11th September where we reminded ourselves about the rights that all children in the world have and focusing in particular on Article 29:

Article 29 of the UNCRC says that a child or young person’s education should help their mind, body and talents be the best they can. It should also build their respect for other people and the world around them. In particular, they should learn to respect:

  • their rights and the rights of others
  • their freedoms and the freedoms of others
  • their parents
  • the identity, language and values of countries— including their own.

Education should prepare children and young people for a responsible life in a free society. It should teach them how to live in an understanding and tolerant way that is non-violent and that respects the environment.

The children amazed all of the adults with their ideas, respectful attitude and enthusiasm! Well done everyone.
