Glassary Primary School

Week beginning 2nd October

Well, can you believe that we have had seven weeks of learning already this session and in a week’s time it will be the October holidays? As they say, time flies when you are having fun and we have had certainly had a lot of fun in our learning so far this session.

Kilmartin Museum visit.

As you will know, the weather meant that we could not go out to the Kilmartin Museum Archaeology Excavation Site last week and that the trip there has been postponed to next year, when the site will be opened up again. Although the children were disappointed not to get a trip on a bus and take their learning into another context, in true Glassary style, we soon came up with a Plan B.

Julia and Jacquelyn, the Education Officers from the Museum, came to school instead and led a brilliant session based on the stone carvings and cup and ring marks in the Historic Scotland Site above the school. The P5 to 7 class went out and looked at the site and then returned to the classroom to create their own rock art designs from clay.

But an added bonus also came when Julia and Jacquelyn visited the P1 to 4 classroom and saw the fantastic rock art designs, which are featured on our school website Gallery and also on Argyll and Bute Council’s social media platforms. They realised that the workshop would absolutely fit with the P1 to 4 project on the Past (By exploring places, investigating artefacts and locating them in time, I have developed an awareness of the ways we remember and preserve Scotland’s history) and invited the P1 to 4 class to join in too. You can see the fabulous joint learning that happened in the Gallery –

Ripples across time

You might also notice the photos in the Gallery of our P6 pupil making patterns and ripples in the puddle at the site. Julia had explained that one theory behind the circular rock designs is that they are based on water ripples. Did you also know that our school logo, also based on the rock art, was designed by the father of the P6 pupil in the photos when he was a pupil at Glassary? There are so many connections across recent and ancient history, if we just take the time to see them.

Many thanks to Julia and Jacquelyn for making the workshop so successful and to pupils and staff for helping us find creative ways to work around the weather!

Castle topic – Wednesday 4th October

On Wednesday the 4th of October P1-7 will be joining together from 1.30pm to take part in a “Grand Battle” to round off the Castles Topic. The aim of the “Grand Battle” is to win possession over the castles that they will be constructing this week and the beginning of next. The battle will be followed by some “jousting” and then a banquette in the “main hall” (P5-7 classroom).

**Disclaimer: “Battles” refers to games such as capture the flag, gauntlet run, king of the pin and “jousting” includes fruit salad tig with hobby horses.  The hands, feet, objects and comments rule will be obtained throughout.**

All children from P1 to P7 are invited to dress up or wear an accessory related to the theme of Medieval Castles on Wednesday if they would like to do so. As part of their learning, the P5 to 7 pupils have created their own outfits for their chosen medieval character and these have been shared in Seesaw. Both classes have been making accessories (eg crowns/jewellery/armour) that can be worn on the day too so there is no expectation that elaborate costumes have to be bought or created at home.

Parental Conversations

It was fantastic to talk to so many of you last week about your child’s learning and successes this term, either in person in school or through a call or Google Meet.

Our next formal feedback to you will come in the week beginning 20th November, when we will send home the first written report of the year.

Ongoing consultation on potential changes to the length of the school day.

Please note that have I amended my summary of discussions at the Parent Council Meeting held on Wednesday 6th September to more accurately reflect the minute of the discussions that was shared by the Parent Council last week:  https://www.glassary.argyll-bute.sch.uk/week-beginning-11th-september/

No decision has been reached as yet and we are ensuring that authority guidance relating to this matter is adhered to.

Reminder

Ipay Impact – please remember to make meal choices for the week.

Have a great week and you know where I am, if you need anything.
